Mumbai's Coastal Road, spanning from Worli to Marine Drive, is set to become fully operational by May, according to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. He made this announcement during a cleanliness campaign, commencing from the twin-tunnel of the Rs. 12,721-crore project near Priyadarshini Park on Napean Sea Road. Shinde's focus on inaugurating key infrastructure projects, including the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link and Mumbai Coastal Road, suggests a strategic approach ahead of the impending Lok Sabha elections.
Responding to Shinde's announcement, Clyde Crasto, the national spokesperson for NCP led by Sharad Pawar, remarked, "We hope the coastal road's leg is opened for motorists as scheduled after completion, without delay for a so-called VIP to cut the grand opening ribbon. This situation has been seen in many completed public utility projects in Maharashtra that remain unopened due to the unavailability of VIPs."
The Mumbai Coastal Road project, initiated in November 2018, initially aimed for completion by November 2023. Due to a design alteration prompted by opposition from Worli fisherfolk, the deadline for the project's final leg has been extended to May 2024.
The chief minister has confirmed that the Mumbai Coastal Road will be toll-free. This decision follows opposition from various parties, including Shiv Sena (UBT), Samajwadi Party, and AAP-Mumbai unit, against BMC's toll proposal.
During a journey through the south-bound tunnel of the coastal road, Shinde highlighted that the project features Saccardo nozzles, a cutting-edge ventilation system, marking a first in India. The tunnels are equipped with emergency facilities every 300 meters, including utility boxes, and boast an advanced traffic management control center.
Shinde affirmed that the coastal road project will extend further up to Versova. This extension is envisioned as a crucial link for the proposed stretch from Versova to Dahisar, connecting seamlessly with the upcoming Mumbai-Delhi Expressway.
