Mumbai, June 14, 2024 – The Mumbai Metro Aqua Line, also known as Line 3 or the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Line, is set to transform the city's public transportation landscape. Phase 1 of this ambitious project, spanning from Aarey Colony to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), is primed to commence operations on July 1, 2024. Overseen by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL), this new line represents a significant modernization effort for the bustling metropolis.
The Mumbai Metro Line 3 is a fully underground metro line, covering a total distance of 33.5 kilometers with 27 stations, 26 of which are underground. The line is designed to handle a daily passenger capacity of 17 lakh individuals, significantly easing congestion on Mumbai's roads and providing a faster, more reliable mode of transport.
The metro line offers seamless connectivity with 8 different railway stations, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), and other metro lines such as 2B and 1. Key stations along the route include:

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 23,136 crore. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is financing a major portion—57.2%—through an Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan of Rs 13,235 crore. This loan has a 30-year repayment period with an interest rate of 1.15% for the project and 0.01% for consulting services.
As Mumbai's first fully underground metro line, Line 3 promises continuous mobile service throughout the journey, enhancing passenger convenience. The trains on this line are designed to accommodate up to three thousand passengers at once. Once Phase 1 is operational, the line will undergo safety clearances to commence autonomous operations, marking a significant milestone in Mumbai's transportation infrastructure.
Construction at the Aarey Depot is nearly complete, with 99.5% of the work finished. Minor finishing touches, trials, and tests are still pending but are expected to be concluded before the July launch. The MMRCL is optimistic about overcoming these final hurdles to ensure a smooth commencement of services.
The launch of the Mumbai Metro Line 3 is eagerly anticipated by Mumbai's residents, promising to bring much-needed relief to the city's overburdened transport system and paving the way for a more connected and efficient urban transit network.
