Pune: The Maharashtra State Registration Department's warning of property attachment for unpaid stamp duty deficits in Pune has sparked urgency among property owners. With a significant number of cases identified and a looming deadline, citizens are urged to take prompt action to avoid potential consequences. This blog delves into the details of the situation, including amnesty schemes, penalty waivers, and citizen concerns, shedding light on the implications for Pune and other key cities in Maharashtra.
Senior registration officials have identified approximately 2.32 lakh cases of unpaid stamp duty deficits in Pune, with only a fraction of individuals responding to notices thus far. The registration department has issued warnings of property attachment for those failing to settle their dues by the end of March.
Among the 11,700 respondents, a portion has paid penalties, while others have benefited from stamp duty waivers or are still under scrutiny. However, the urgency remains as the department aims to recover pending dues by the March-end deadline.
With cases predominantly from Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Nagpur, the government anticipates a potential revenue of around Rs. 3,000 crore if citizens comply with payment requests. Amnesty schemes and penalty waivers for cases dating between 1980-2020 aim to incentivize timely payments.
The amnesty scheme offers varying degrees of waivers based on the stamp duty amount and registration period. Cases registered between 1980-2000 may receive complete stamp duty and penalty waivers for amounts less than Rs. 1 lakh, with a 50% waiver for larger amounts. Similarly, cases from 2000-2020 may benefit from a 25% stamp duty waiver for amounts below Rs. 25 crores.
Amidst the urgency to clear dues, citizen activist S Joshi emphasizes the importance of considering the timeframe before initiating actions. Delays in notice delivery have raised concerns among citizens, urging the registration office to address such issues.
The stamp duty alert issued by the Maharashtra State Registration Department underscores the critical need for property owners in Pune to address pending dues promptly. This blog highlights the implications of unpaid stamp duty deficits, amnesty schemes, and citizen concerns, emphasizing the importance of timely compliance to avoid property seizure and penalties.
