BMC Issues Notice: Mumbai Metro Contractors Default on Rs. 370 Crore Property Tax

Mumbai: The BMC's assessment and collection department highlighted the contractual obligation of the Metro rail contractors to cover property tax liabilities, particularly concerning the casting yard plot. Despite these contractual agreements, delays in payment have persisted, leading to the issuance of notices to several companies involved in the Metro project, including M/s HCC - MMC, M/s CEC - ITD, M/s Doga Soma, and M/s L & T (Larsen & Toubro).

This recent notice follows previous actions taken by the BMC to address non-payment issues within the Mumbai Metro project. In March 2022, the civic body attached 24 properties, including Azad Nagar, Versova, and DN Nagar metro stations, due to non-payment of property tax since the commencement of operations.

As the financial year approaches its end, the BMC provided an update on property tax collections, indicating a total of Rs. 2,213 crore collected thus far. Notably, the K/East ward recorded the highest property tax collection, surpassing Rs. 208 crore, followed by K/West ward (Rs. 174.15 crore), S division (Rs. 170.77 crore), and H/East ward (Rs. 168.34 crore). Additionally, approximately Rs. 9.15 crore in property tax revenue was sourced from government assets.

Conclusion:

The issue of property tax default by Mumbai Metro contractors underscores the importance of adherence to contractual obligations and timely payments. The BMC's notice serves as a reminder of the significant financial implications and regulatory measures associated with non-compliance. It also highlights the ongoing efforts of the civic body to ensure effective revenue collection for essential municipal services and infrastructure development.
